Deep Earth

23 January - 14 March 2010

Avitel Sheffer

Roy O'Brien Gallery

Deep Earth introduces a new body of work by ceramic artist Avitel Sheffer. Sheffer's investigates themes of mythology, religion and language and is informed by her Middle Eastern and Jewish heritage. While reflecting on ancient civilisations, the idiosyncratic forms of refined surfaces of the vessels ground them firmly in the contemporary.

Sheffer's forms are contained and voluptuous, architectural and anthropomorphic, layered with detail and levels of meaning. Combining hand-forming techniques with a unique printing practice, Sheffer has created a coherent family of vessels narrating a story of community and solitude.

Forgotten Landscape

27 February - 11 April 2010

Community Gallery

Rosa Purbrick & Jen Davies

Forgotten Landscape brings together the work of two contemporary artists, Jen Davies and Rosa Purbrick. Through very different bodies of work, the artists present a non-traditional consideration of our local landscape and natural environment. Inspired by the complexities of climate change, the artists have examined the cyclical ecology of the natural environment and its relationship to the human condition.

Subsequently, the works disrupt an increasingly pervasive disengagement with our external surrounds. The works encourage the viewer to rediscover the minutiae of an ever changing environment which is marked by cycles of renewal, deterioration and rejuvenation.
